Abstract

This paper examines whether the Canberra Plan can be applied to gender. Fletcher (2023) argues that although ideology infects common opinion about gender, The Plan can nevertheless be reconstructed to filter out distorted platitudes and deliver justice-promoting conclusions. I argue that such filtering undermines The Plan’s defining commitments. The upshot is stark. Either The Plan fails as a fully generalisable metaphysical programme, or we must accept pluralism about metaphysical methodology, with different domains requiring different approaches.
