Abstract

Edible robotics represents a transformative innovation at the intersection of food science, robotics, and sustainable development. Unlike traditional biodegradable materials, which are environmentally friendly but not ingestible, edible robotics utilizes food-grade, digestible, and biocompatible materials to create functional robotic systems that can safely interact with humans and the environment. This review examines the evolution of edible materials from basic biodegradable substrates to complex systems that incorporate proteins, hydrogels, enzymes, and edible electronics. Emphasis is placed on advanced manufacturing techniques, particularly 4D and 5D printing, which enable the design of dynamic, responsive, and structurally intricate edible robots. These systems have promising applications in food design, targeted drug delivery, personalized nutrition, and environmental sustainability. By integrating smart materials with responsive behavior, edible robots can perform specific tasks before being safely consumed or decomposed, aligning with circular economy principles. The review also discusses current trends, fabrication methods, material innovations, and real-world prototypes, while addressing challenges such as regulatory compliance, scalability, and consumer acceptance. Edible robotics presents a novel approach to reducing waste, enhancing food system resilience, and delivering multifunctional solutions that serve both technological and nutritional purposes in a sustainable manner.
