Recent Advances in Black Soldier Fly Larvae ( Hermetia illucens ) as a Promising Food Source: Nutritional Profile, Extraction, and Food Applications
Abstract
With the global population rapidly increasing, high food demand has brought huge pressure on the current food system. Therefore, developing novel and sustainable food sources to meet growing food demand is necessary. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have gained significant attention worldwide as a promising sustainable food source that can alleviate the global food crisis and environmental burden. BSFL has high nutritional value and can convert waste into valuable ingredients. This review summarises the potential nutritional value of BSFL and provides an overview of current advances in the extraction of high value ingredients from BSFL and the development of BSFL-based foods. Overall, this review could help to better understand the potential of BSFL as a sustainable food source and promote its further development and utilisation in various food systems, thereby building a more sustainable food system and achieving zero hunger.
