Abstract

Breakthroughs in College Reading: the Promises and Tensions of Disciplinary Reading Apprenticeships presents a collection of multidisciplinary reflections and research articles on the Reading Apprenticeships framework. This framework invites students to engage in metacognitive conversations to make visible the challenges, skills, and background knowledge required to read disciplinary texts. The framework motivates students to become empowered, critical readers by sparking curiosity and providing reading supports through peer-to-peer learning. This book will be of interest to any college professor and many high school teachers whose classes focus on reading or feature technical or complex texts. While the framework’s flagship book, Reading for Understanding, may offer a more general introduction, Breakthroughs in College Reading provides an accessible complement that offers important insight into disciplinary reading in the college classroom.
