Odd-fold symmetry contributed transverse magnetoresistance in single crystal Fe(211)/Pt(110)
Abstract
Abstract Magnetoresistance in single-crystal ferromagnets can exhibit unconventional symmetry in specific crystal planes, where the interplay between magnetic-field orientation and crystal symmetry enables tailored transport properties. Here we perform the current orientations dependent longitudinal and transverse resistivities of epitaxial Fe(211)/Pt(110) films. The transverse resistivity shows unequal extrema, indicating an odd-fold component beyond conventional even-fold magnetoresistance. Using the phenomenological model-based resistivity tensor expansion, we derive analytical expressions for anisotropic magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect in the Fe(211) plane and identify symmetry-allowed odd-fold terms governed by the coefficient D 2 . The observed behavior is reproduced experimentally for the single crystal Fe(211) ferromagnet grown on an MgO(110) substrate, confirming that it is symmetry-allowed and primarily originates from the Fe(211) plane rather than requiring Pt-related effects. These results offer a deeper insight into magnetoresistance governed by specific crystal orientations and paving the way for novel spintronics memory devices with tailored crystal symmetry.
