Simultaneous band gap and energy harvesting in a metabeam with periodically attached electromagnetic resonators
Abstract
Abstract This paper introduces an innovative framework for achieving both vibration suppression and energy harvesting within structural systems, aligning with sustainable development goal 7: affordable and clean energy. The proposed concept employs a metabeam integrated with periodically positioned electromagnetic resonators, where each resonator consists of a mechanical oscillator coupled with an electrical circuit. This electromechanical interaction enables simultaneous vibration mitigation and energy conversion. An analytical formulation is developed to characterize the dynamic behavior of the metabeam incorporating the resonator array. The periodic arrangement induces subwavelength band gaps that effectively attenuate propagating waves, while the electrical subsystem allows direct extraction of energy through the coupled circuitry. Dispersion characteristics are derived using the transfer matrix method in combination with the Bloch–Floquet theorem, demonstrating that the proposed electromagnetic resonator configuration achieves broader attenuation bands compared to conventional spring–mass–damper resonator systems. A detailed parametric study illustrates how variations in system parameters influence wave suppression, frequency response, and energy output. The results highlight the resonator’s tunability and multifunctional performance in achieving both band gap formation and efficient energy harvesting. These features highlight its strong potential for wave attenuation and the development of energy-autonomous structures to support clean, sustainable energy solutions.
