Engaging students in electrodynamics: an integrated approach to teaching divergence of electrostatic field
Abstract
Abstract This article explores the teaching of electrodynamics, a challenging yet foundational subject in theoretical physics. It highlights the early hurdle students face in learning vector analysis, a key mathematical tool used to describe electromagnetic fields and their interactions with matter. The manuscript commences with the introduction of two teaching approaches: the classical method, which emphasizes conceptual understanding through examples like the relationship between electric field flux and charge distribution, and the mathematical method, which applies Coulomb’s law and vector calculus directly to compute the divergence of the electrostatic field. While the classical approach fosters physical intuition, the mathematical approach enhances efficiency. The integration of both methods creates a robust and comprehensive educational experience, effectively balancing conceptual depth and analytical precision to accommodate diverse learning levels. Ultimately, this integrated methodology aims to inspire students to master electrodynamics by reinforcing the connection between mathematical tools and physical phenomena.
