Investigation on the impact of internal diameter of hollow cylinder and properties of metallic plate on performance in the optimization of acoustic energy harvesting system by using PVDF transducer
Abstract
Abstract In the proposed work, we have implemented an enhanced and optimized acoustic energy harvesting system that comprises of a polyvinyl chloride hollow cylinder coupled with a circular metallic plate and a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric transducer on top of it. The operational principle of the system is based on resonance induced amplification of acoustic pressure within the cylinder that drives vibrations on the metallic plate. These vibrations enable the PVDF transducer to convert the vibrations into electrical output due to the piezoelectric effect. As compared to our previous study based on ceramic piezoelectric transducers, which yielded 57.6 µ W output power, the proposed system demonstrates superior performance with a maximum output power of 1.2 mW and a power density of 3.076 µ W mm −3 . For a given sound pressure level of 120 dB and with a resonance frequency of 340 Hz, the system yielded a maximum peak-to-peak voltage of 7400 mV. The influence of resonance frequency, properties of the metallic plate and configuration of the cylinder on output response has been analytically and experimentally validated in the proposed work. The results highlight the critical influence of geometrical parameters, material properties, and structural optimization on acoustic-to-electric energy conversion. The optimized system offers significant potential for powering low-power electronic devices and is cost effective and simple in design. The proposed work also provides a comprehensive equivalent circuit model of the system to describe the interaction between the acoustic, mechanical, and electrical domains of the system.
