A flux pumped conduction cooled portable HTS magnet
Abstract
Abstract Compact conduction-cooled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet systems are desirable in various applications. HTS flux pumps can replace bulky current leads to significantly reduce cryogenic heat load, providing an effective solution for quasi-persistent operation of HTS magnets. This makes them highly attractive for high field applications with stringent constraints on size, weight, and power consumption. In this work, we designed and developed a portable conduction-cooled HTS magnet system, through-wall powered by a transformer-self-rectifier flux pump. Due to relatively low cryogenic heat load, the magnet was able to be cooled by a low power Stirling refrigerator. Operated at approximately 40 K, the magnet generated a continuously adjustable magnetic field up to approximately 1.6 T in its room-temperature bore. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using the transformer-rectifier flux pump to facilitate compact and low power demand HTS magnets, indicating potentials for practical applications.
