Dual-band wide-angle frequency beam scanning antenna based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons
Abstract
Abstract This work proposes a novel design for realizing a dual-band wide-angle frequency beam scanning antenna based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPP). The proposed antenna achieves independent wide-angle beam scanning across dual frequency bands by simultaneously controlling electromagnetic wave radiation in the fast- and slow-wave regions. A glide-symmetric SSPP transmission line is designed to enable high-frequency radiation without additional structures. Furthermore, by loading shunt-connected periodic rectangular metallic patches along the SSPP transmission line, the low-frequency SSPP waves in the slow-wave region are perturbed, thereby generating a second radiation band. Unlike previous designs, this work demonstrates negligible open stopband effects in both operational bands through simulation. A prototype was manufactured and experimentally evaluated, demonstrating good consistency between experimental data and simulated results. The antenna achieves wide scanning angles of 104° (4.2–8.2 GHz) and 93° (10.5–29 GHz), offering a promising solution for multi-function wireless communication systems such as intelligent transportation.
