Abstract

Abstract Wien filters using orthogonal electric and magnetic fields for velocity selection, are widely used in high-resolution electron optics. Recent progress in multipole compensation, symmetric pole geometries, and dual-stage composite-field architectures has reduced fringe-field distortions. It also improves field uniformity and stabilizes optical-axis propagation over a wide operating range. These advances extend Wien filters beyond conventional energy analysis. They broaden their application across modern electron and ion beam systems, enhancing signal discrimination, contrast, energy resolution, and multidimensional spectral imaging. Despite this progress, residual fringe-field aberrations and strong alignment sensitivity still limit performance, especially under miniaturization and high-throughput operation. Achieving long-term field stability and robust, repeatable tuning across a wide range remains challenging. Collectively, these developments position the Wien filter as a multifunctional, system-level field-engineering module. This role supports next-generation electron-optical instrumentation with higher resolution, reduced aberrations, and enhanced analytical capability.
