Abstract

Abstract How can digital transformation be applied in ionizing radiation metrology to make measurement data and services traceable, automated, interoperable, and reproducible? The Consultative Committee for Ionizing Radiation (CCRI) task group on digital transformation addresses this question by gathering expertise in the field, conducting focused meetings on key topics, conducting surveys amongst the ionizing radiation metrology community, and hosting public webinars. The task group has defined a practical technical roadmap based on the group’s findings. The roadmap includes key and high-priority topics such as adopting machine-readable formats such as the digital calibration certificate, implementing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles, and validating software and artificial intelligence (AI) models. Progress is evident in establishing a digital semantics foundation through the International Bureau of Weights and Measures International System of Units digital framework, but key gaps remain in the FAIR data needs for dosimetry, radionuclide, and neutron metrology. As the task group’s foundational work concludes, we outline the path forward for a new permanent CCRI working group to address the next phase of the digital transformation journey to ensure a coordinated and traceable future for the field.
