Abstract

Abstract Even if the crystal symmetry is low, the relatively localized 4 f electrons in heavy rare-earth compounds have the potential to undergo not only magnetic ordering but also multipolar ordering since they have a large total angular momentum. We performed ultrasonic measurements and the strain susceptibility analysis on ErB4, and clarified the crystal electric field state of the 4 f electrons. In addition, we proposed the reason why the multipolar ordering is absent in the antiferromagnetic state of ErB 4 below T N = 15.4 K.
