Abstract

Abstract We have successfully grown single crystals of EuPdSi 3 using the In-flux method and measured their magnetic properties. EuPdSi 3 is found to crystallize in the same tetragonal BaNiSn 3 -type structure as other EuTX 3 (T: transition metal, X: Si, Ge) compounds. From magnetic susceptibility measurements, two successive antiferromagnetic transitions were observed at 19.1 K and 14.4 K, indicating the presence of two distinct antiferromagnetic structures. The magnetization curve for H ||[001] shows two-step metamagnetic transitions at 27 kOe and 33 kOe and saturates above 61 kOe, while the magnetization curve for H ||[100] increases almost linearly up to 70 kOe. The magnetic phase diagram obtained from these measurements is separated into three antiferromagnetic phases labeled AF1, AF2, and AF3. We conclude that the AF1 phase is a collinear antiferromagnetic phase, AF2 is an incommensurate modulated structure, and AF3 (for H ||[100]) is a spin-flopping phase connecting AF2 and the field-induced ferromagnetic phase.
