Flow characteristics of the hypersonic inlet unstart/restart process induced by downstream backpressure
Abstract
Abstract To investigate the characteristics of the hypersonic inlet unstart/restart process induced by downstream backpressure, two-dimensional unsteady numerical simulations were conducted at typical freestream Mach numbers of 5.5, 5.715, 6.0, and 7.0. The inlet went through the start, unstart, and restart processes in sequence. Results show that the unstart oscillation mainly consists of the reciprocating motion of the primary separation and the terminal shock train. If the primary separation cannot be swallowed through the throat during the unstart oscillation, then the inlet will not be restarted even if the downstream backpressure is eliminated.
