Simulation study of a semi-packed gas chromatography column with water drop-shaped posts
Abstract
Abstract In micro gas chromatography, the hydrodynamic characteristics of the micro gas chromatography column determine the separation efficiency and energy consumption of the overall system. This study systematically analyzed a semi-packed gas chromatography column with water drop-shaped posts (SC-WP) to reveal the effects of micro-pillar morphology and the arrangement on the flow field distribution and pressure drop characteristics. The numerical simulation results obtained using COMSOL Multiphysics software show that, compared with a semi-packed gas chromatography column with elliptic cylindrical posts of the same effective width, the SC-WP can reduce the pressure drop by approximately 14%–17% while maintaining a similar surface area and reducing the volume by about 18%. After further optimizing the post arrangement, the reduction in pressure drop exceeded 35%. The SC-WP array demonstrates a more uniform flow velocity distribution and gentler velocity peaks in critical regions. This effect weakens vortices and flow dead zones, thereby significantly enhancing flow field stability and separation efficiency. This study provides new ideas and a theoretical basis for the design of high-performance, energy-efficient micro gas chromatography columns.
