Abstract

Abstract This investigation examines the bending fatigue characteristics of next generation corrosion-resistant aviation gear steel in cylindrical gears. Standard compliant cylindrical gear parameters were developed specifically for the bending fatigue experiments. The testing plan was established and carried out to perform bending fatigue assessments on the gears. The experimental data were analyzed employing the Dixon-Mood (D-M) approach integrated with Monte Carlo simulation and a standard deviation adjustment technique for data processing. A comparison was made between the gear fatigue limits derived from the two techniques across different reliability levels. The findings reveal that the test gear’s bending fatigue limit reaches 578.06 MPa at 95% confidence and 90% reliability. This outcome establishes an essential foundation for implementing this material in aviation gear systems, highlighting its favorable fatigue properties.
