Abstract

Abstract We discuss the perturbations of black hole solutions in the context of quadratic gravity, including ones that differ from those predicted in General Relativity (GR). The non-GR branch of solutions only exists within a specific parameter range and is characterized by a richer spectrum of modes, since for gravitational perturbations in particular, two types of quasinormal modes emerge which we characterize as massless-led and massive-led ones. This rich spectrum of modes arises due to the specific mixing of the metric perturbations and those of an auxiliary tensor field, associated with the presence of a massive spin-2 mode in the theory. We also discuss potential excitations of the various modes in the context of observations.
