Abstract

Abstract Conventional methods for determining the damping properties of metallic alloys resulting from internal friction typically require standardized specimens, specialized test rigs, and advanced techniques such as static hysteresis tests. However, such methods are often impractical during the early stages of alloy development, where rapid screening of multiple compositions is essential. This paper presents an experimental approach for evaluating the elastic-strain-dependent damping behavior of metallic alloys using a simplified test setup. Metallic alloy wires are utilized as bending beams with one end fixed, and their vibrational response is measured using a non-contact Laser Doppler Vibrometer system. The developed methodology allows for efficient comparative analysis of different alloy compositions without the need for complex specimen preparation. As part of ongoing research focused on optimizing the damping properties of CuAlMn alloys, this approach enables the rapid assessment of internal friction characteristics, thereby supporting accelerated material development.
