Abstract

Abstract We consider the Bak–Sneppen model of biological evolution, which exhibits self-organized criticality. The model remains well studied and displays the signature of 1 / f α noise in fitness fluctuations (Singh et al 2023 Phys. Rev. E 108 044109). We examine the maximum fitness and its location signals by computing power spectra for different system sizes. We find a signature of long-time correlations. By applying finite-size scaling, we determine the spectral exponent and data collapse. The analysis suggests a spectral exponent α ≈ 1.4 for the maximum fitness and its location. We also examine similar properties for different variants of the model.
