Site-specific high-yield varieties on acid sulfate soils: a key strategy for increasing rice productivity
Abstract
Abstract Acid sulfate soils are a part of tidal swamp ecosystems with potential for rice cultivation. However, they present several yield-limiting factors, primarily due to the presence of pyrite layers. Consequently, these lands are commonly planted with traditional local rice varieties that are long-maturing and low-yielding, typically producing less than 3 tons per hectare. To increase rice production on such lands, it is essential to promote the use of site-specific high-yield rice varieties capable of achieving yields above 4 tons per hectare. This paper is based on a review of research findings, expert opinions, and field experience related to the development of high-yield rice varieties for acid sulfate tidal swamp lands. This paper aims to highlight the importance of selecting and using high-yield rice varieties tailored to the specific conditions of acid sulfate tidal swamp lands, thereby improving productivity. Site-specific high-yield rice varieties for these environments include Inpara 1, Inpara 2, Inpara 3, Inpara 4, Inpara 5, Inpara 6, Inpara 7, Inpara 8, Inpara 1 Inpara 9, Inpara 10, Inpara 11, and Inpara 12. The Inpara varieties have an average yield range of 4.8 to 7.6 tons per ha. In addition, there are other promising high-yield varieties, both inbred and hybrid, that can serve as alternative options for farmers. Proper selection and use of suitable rice varieties are crucial to narrowing the gap between potential and actual yields in the field, ultimately leading to increased rice production.
