Abstract

Abstract Rainfed rice fields are at high risk of production fluctuations that can affect the uncertainty of farm household income. This uncertainty also affects the condition of food security and the survival strategies adopted by households. This study aims to determine the proportion of food expenditure, the level of nutrition consumption, food security, and survival strategies in rainfed rice farm households in Boyolali District, one of the mountainous areas in Central Java. The study applied descriptive and quantitative methods to analyze food expenditure proportion, nutrition consumption level, food security, and survival strategy. The research location is in Boyolali District, with 60 convenience sampling samples taken. The results show that the proportion of food expenditure is 59.10% for direct expenditure and 63.13% for total expenditure. The level of nutritional consumption is 74.26% for energy and 86.46% for protein. The level of food security based on direct expenditure is food less secure condition, while based on total expenditure, it is food insecure condition. Survival strategies include saving rice yield (100%), reducing household expenditure (76.67%), involving other family members to work (75%), doing different off-farm jobs (63.33%), and making farming costs efficient (63.33%), respectively.
