Abstract

We introduce the proceedings of the Joint Workshop of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) Joint Programmes on Energy Storage (ES), Clean Energy tranSition for Sustainable Society (e3s), Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) and Digitalisation for Energy (DfE) , held from 13 th to 14 th May 2025 at the Telecommunications School of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in Spain (link). The workshop was conceived as a joint initiative to strengthen cross-programme collaboration within EERA and to address, from complementary perspectives, the challenges associated with the smart operation of energy storage technologies in future energy markets. This 2-day length workshop brought together leading researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders from across Europe to engage in interdisciplinary discussions on the smart operation of energy storage technologies in future energy markets . Energy storage systems are increasingly recognised as critical enablers of the clean energy transition, supporting the large-scale integration of renewable sources, enhancing system flexibility and resilience, and supporting the efficient operation of interconnected energy systems, . The event provided a platform to explore recent advances in optimisation methods, predictive analytics, hybridisation strategies, sector coupling, socio-economic aspects, digitalisation and modelling frameworks— all essential to maximise the performance of storage solutions in evolving energy systems. In this context, the Joint Programme on Energy Storage (ES) provided a strong technical foundation, focusing on advanced storage technologies, operational strategies, optimisation approaches and system integration aspects that underpin reliable and efficient storage deployment across different time and spatial scales.
