Performance of Steel Waste Tyre Fibre (SWTF) on Creep Deformation Resistance Behaviour of Hot Mix Asphalt
Abstract
Abstract Hot-mix asphalt (HMA) often struggles with creep deformation, particularly at high temperatures and prolonged loads, resulting in rutting and a reduced lifespan. This study explores adding Steel Waste Tyre Fibre (SWTF) to HMA to boost performance and sustainability. SWTF can significantly enhance creep resistance, thereby extending pavement life and reducing maintenance costs. Using SWTF also supports environmental goals by recycling waste, reducing the use of virgin materials, and conserving resources. The research analyses aggregates, bitumen, and SWTF to determine the optimal mix for 12.5 mm NMAS. It tests creep performance with 1%, 2%, and 3% SWTF content, using sieve analysis, softening, and penetration tests. Samples were prepared using a Superpave Gyratory Compactor, with 5.5% bitumen determined as the optimal content. Standard EN 12697 creep tests showed 2% SWTF gave the best results: deformation of 0.0581 mm, creep stiffness of 4.8 MPa, and a modulus of 7,259.845 MPa. Data confirms that WTSF improves asphalt’s mechanical properties. This research supports the use of SWTF in sustainable infrastructure and future civil engineering studies.
