A brief history of SETI and thought about aliens. Includes a discussion of the plurality of worlds hypothesis in various cultures and early attempts to think about and communicate with other intelligent species in the heavens. The rest of the chapter covers the development of the modern scientific efforts, including the Green Bank Workshop, the Byurakan Conferences, the Order of the Dolphin, Project Cyclops, the rise and fall of American government involvement, and the field's turn to philanthropy.
