Abstract

A description of the Fermi Paradox and the Mystery of the Great Silence. Begins with a discussion of the origin of the term Fermi Paradox and the basic calculation that likely inspired Fermi's question, followed by a discussion of both Hart and Tipler's formulation of the idea, and counterarguments to their formulations. Also includes a discussion of the related concept of the Mystery of the Great Silence, the role of Cosmic Haystack calculations in addressing it. Concludes with an incomplete catalog and critique of some categories of proffered “solutions.'' Includes exercises for students.
