Abstract

The role of polarization in electromagnetics is discussed in detail, starting with wave solutions of Maxwell’s equation. Polarization is introduced in the context of the electric field direction of plane waves. Mathematical tools such as the polarization ellipse and Jones matrices are described. Partial polarization is introduced in the context of coherence theory. The Muller matrix formulism is introduced and examples of polarization transformation are provided.
