Abstract

This chapter focuses on instrumentation for polarimetry, summarizing design considerations for the various elements in different polarimeter configurations. Components such as optics, diplexers, modulators and detectors are presented. Concepts pertaining to the performance of general polarimeters are reviewed, including noise, cross-polarization, polarization isolation, instrumental polarization, and polarization efficiency. The chapter concludes with a discussion of polarization architectures along with a brief history of the evolution of polarimeters used for polarized thermal dust emission in the interstellar medium.
