Abstract

Abstract A circularly polarized compact implantable antenna with dual resonance is proposed in this study for wireless biomedical telemetry applications. The proposed antenna operates at two crucial bands at 1.4 GHz and 2.45 GHz. By using two L-shaped patches, a shorting pin and a slotted ground section, the proposed antenna achieved miniaturization and dual-band characteristics with a compact size of 4 × 4 × 1.27 m m 3 (in terms of λ 0 , 0.0186 λ 0 × 0.0186 λ 0 × 0.0059 λ 0 which is calculated at the lower band of frequency). Additionally, circular polarization is achieved at the 2.45 GHz resonance band by adding the rhombus patch at the center-top of the antenna. Furthermore, at different data rates, the link budget is calculated to ensure reliable communication. The proposed antenna can reliably communicate at distances greater than 2 m at both operating frequencies. Specific absorption rate is simulated, and the results are compliant with IEEE guidelines. Hence, the proposed antenna is suitable for the biomedical implantable application.
