Catalysis
Abstract
In a surface catalytic process, the reaction occurs through a sequence of elementary steps involving surface chemistry. These include adsorption, diffusion, chemical rearrangements (including bond breaking bond-forming, and molecular rearrangement) and finally desorption. Basic principles are described and a real-world example of the Born-Haber synthesis of ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen is described in detail.
