Abstract

Abstract This chapter formulates and provides an account of the core tenets, contributions, and critiques of the phenomenological approach to the anthropology of religion. Beginning with a brief discussion of the concept of “phenomenon” and the philosophical origins of the phenomenological method, the chapter then turns to considering specifically the application of phenomenological thought within the anthropology of religion. In so doing, the chapter aims to provide a historical and critical perspective demonstrating how phenomenological analysis has contributed a distinctive voice to the anthropology of religion. Finally, the chapter provides a brief account of some ongoing developments in the phenomenological anthropology of religion before concluding by suggesting areas for development and further research.
