Islam
Abstract
Abstract This chapter seeks to bring attention to key themes and debates in the anthropology of Islam, especially those that turn on the relevance of the category of “religion” to this endeavor. The aim is to shed light on debates central to the discipline’s engagement with Islam and relate these to the study and conceptualization of religion more generally. Anthropological contributions to the study of Islam have grown in significance and vitality over the past three decades. The chapter emphasizes how the best of this recent work demonstrates the ways in which Islam is both deeply yet also diffusely embedded in everyday experience and social relationships.
