The statistics of the new
Abstract
Abstract This chapter reviews the main statistical principles used to understand how novelties emerge. It starts with the classic species sampling problem and then introduces three key empirical laws: Zipf’s law, which describes frequency hierarchies; Heaps’ law, which addresses the rate of innovation; and Taylor’s law, which relates to the patterns of fluctuations. The chapter examines how these laws interact with one another and discusses the difference between intrinsic observation and real-time observation. Finally, it concludes by presenting methods for conducting empirical analyses of these statistical signatures in real-world data.
