Abstract

Abstract Chapter 6 delves into how to match conflict resolution strategies to the intensity of a given conflict. It emphasizes the need to identify the right problem before intervening and cautions against addressing only the most apparent expressions of a conflict. The chapter builds on the levels of conflict model: Level 1 involves practical disputes and can often be resolved through negotiation. Level 2 requires relationship-building and addressing underlying tensions. Level 3 deals with deeply entrenched, identity-based conflicts that demand long-term reconciliation efforts. The chapter highlights the importance of third-party intervention, particularly for more complex conflicts, and provides a framework for determining when outside help is necessary. The core components of conflict resolution—issues, relationships, and process—are outlined as essential elements in every conflict resolution dialogue.
