Abstract

Abstract Chapter 7 discusses settling disputes through negotiation, particularly in Level 1 conflicts where the issues are practical and can be managed without external intervention. It introduces interest-based negotiation, which emphasizes addressing underlying interests rather than positional bargaining. The chapter explains how conflicts often arise from opposing positions, but solutions are found by identifying shared interests. It also explores the importance of maintaining relationships during negotiations, avoiding win–lose mindsets, and engaging affected communities in decision-making processes. The chapter highlights negotiation techniques like asking ‘why’ and reframing issues while cautioning against toxic tactics such as exaggerated demands or personal attacks. By mastering interest-based negotiation, individuals can address everyday disputes more effectively and prevent conflicts from escalating to more complex levels.
