Abstract

Abstract Chapter 9 studies Level 3 conflicts, characterized by deep divisions rooted in identity and reinforced by economic, social, and political systems. These intractable conflicts, often self-sustaining and resistant to resolution, require long-term strategies for reconciliation. Identity-based conflicts are particularly challenging as they involve non-negotiable values that threaten the very identity of the parties involved. Reconciliation processes emphasize dignity, respect, and building trust through gradual and incremental change. The chapter discusses the importance of understanding sacred values, participatory conflict analysis, and designing inclusive interventions. It highlights reconciliation’s role in restoring relationships and preventing future conflicts while promoting a transformation that addresses systemic inequalities. Dialogue remains a vital tool in fostering mutual understanding, humanizing opponents, and creating sustainable, long-term solutions.
