Abstract

Abstract The introduction gives an overview of Hermann Lotze’s role in the development of German philosophy after Hegel’s death and outlines the main lines of his influence on American and British philosophy and psychology. The introduction then introduces the main themes of the book: the fundamental role of interest (feeling) in theorizing mental phenomena and the importance of the soul for psychology. Many philosophers and psychologists followed F. A. Lange’s credo to dare to develop a ‘Psychology without the Soul’. Lotze did the opposite. I will introduce the issues that drive this debate to set the stage for the book.
