My Body: Bodily Awareness and General Feeling
Abstract
Abstract For each of us, our world is divided into one centre, us, and all the rest. Which factor or factors are responsible for this division? This chapter first briefly revisits some of the main answers to these questions in German philosophy leading up to Lotze and then examines his feeling-based answer. It finds Lotze’s view wanting as an answer to the question about the source of the self-world distinction, but it suggests a related and more promising view of the sense of embodiment. What makes a body seem to be the body in which I am; which is mine? According to Lotze, the general feeling plays the central role in answering this question.
