Abstract

Abstract The impacts of spatial computing technologies vary significantly across a diverse global population with a myriad of cultural perspectives and values. Investigating the ethical implications of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), this chapter nonetheless emphasizes the necessity of establishing a universally recognized ethical framework for this burgeoning industry. It dissects the mental and social consequences of spatial computing, highlighting both the positive aspects such as therapy and communication, and the negative aspects including cyberbullying and cognitive overload. It also addresses deceptive design patterns. The chapter introduces the concept of a risk register, which is a method to document and assess risks, and to identify ways to mitigate them for a successful project. Furthermore, it emphasizes the significance of regulations and the distinction between personal and organizational ethics. Ultimately, this chapter calls for the incorporation of culturally relevant principles to ensure equitable, fair, and accessible spatial computing. Drawing from lessons learned in the development of the Web, it offers guidance for preserving diverse values and beliefs to foster ethical design and responsible technological implementation.
