Abstract

Abstract Chapter 5 explores the intricate relationship between spatial computing technologies and fundamental human traits, shedding light on the impact of modern technology on human experiences. This chapter presents an analysis of human traits, scrutinized through systematic, cultural, societal, individual, and internal lenses. Traits such as ability, choices, communication, compassion, creativity, curiosity, emotions, and intelligence are dissected, revealing how spatial computing can affect and augment each one. Spatial computing can facilitate inclusive experiences for individuals with disabilities through virtual reality (VR), empower creativity via augmented reality (AR) tools, and transform communication and compassion. Through critical design and speculative scenarios, the chapter explores the potential advantages and risks of this dynamic human–technology relationship. The chapter encourages a thoughtful approach to design, emphasizing the importance of intention and impact. It highlights the significance of co-design and participatory design in fostering inclusivity and accessibility, while considering broader societal and ethical implications in the ever-evolving technological landscape. This chapter equips readers with a broad perspective on the transformative potential of spatial computing and provides a practical roadmap for designers and researchers to navigate the intricate relationship between human traits and spatial computing technologies, fostering thoughtful and ethical design practices.
