Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores the transformative impact of spatial computing on our lives, with a focus on its rapid adoption and the many ethical considerations it produces. It first delves into the rapid adoption of video conferencing and virtual reality (VR) during the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the shift toward spatial computing platforms, such as the Immersive Digital experiences, as companies like Meta invest in the development of three-dimensional, spatial, and social platforms. The chapter then emphasizes the importance of advocacy, legislation, and a global perspective in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by spatial computing. It discusses the role of underrepresented communities in shaping technology narratives and the need for inclusivity in the development of spatial computing technologies. It investigates the integration of brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) into spatial computing as a groundbreaking convergence that can empower individuals with disabilities, but also raises significant safety concerns. Throughout the chapter, the text underscores the significance of critical evaluation, responsibility, and equality to ensure that spatial computing serves as a force for good. It calls for a collaborative effort between individuals and corporations to create a more inclusive and human-conscious digital ecosystem as spatial computing continues to shape our future.
