You are your memory
Abstract
Abstract This chapter highlights memory’s essential role in everyday life, from recognising faces to maintaining relationships and recalling significant events. It reviews the history of memory research, from Ebbinghaus’s pioneering work to recent developments in neuroscience and cognitive psychology. The chapter explores how memory works, emphasising its dynamic and selective nature, where personal experiences and emotions shape recall. It discusses how memory is reconstructed and influenced by prior knowledge and how researchers study it using controlled experiments. Finally, the chapter concludes by presenting contemporary research that reveals memory as an active process, not a passive repository.
