Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores techniques for improving memory, focusing on both the ‘hardware’ (neural systems) and ‘software’ (memory strategies). It discusses the limitations of enhancing the neural components of memory and reviews effective methods such as mnemonics to optimise memory encoding. The chapter covers strategies like spaced retrieval, errorless learning, and elaborative rehearsal, which improve retention. It also emphasises the role of meaning and imagery in memory enhancement and introduces mnemonic devices like the method of loci and pegwords. Finally, the chapter provides practical study tips, highlighting the importance of attention, motivation, and memory techniques to maximise learning.
