Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the recent movement to reduce Sulpicia’s elegies and epigrams to pseudepigrapha, by categorically denying both female authorship and Augustan date to the cycle. Feminist critics have long documented a persistent tendency to downplay the evidence for, and dismiss the value of, female artistic creation. The conclusion argues that this tendency is exemplified in the recent scholarship on Sulpicia.
