Abstract

Abstract Chapter 4 explores pedagogical strategies for teaching issues related to qualitative study design. It discusses both the conceptual and practical problems that need to be considered before starting a project. Topics covered include asking qualitative questions, depth versus breadth of research questions, and emergent design. It also includes considerations about the study team, sampling and saturation, recruitment of participants, community engagement and embeddedness, data management, and bringing a study’s design together by using a methodological approach such as grounded theory, ethnography, narrative research, or phenomenology. The chapter guides instructors as they help students grasp the holistic approach required for successful qualitative studies in public health.
