Abstract

Abstract Assessing student learning and assigning grades is part of teaching qualitative methods. This chapter argues that effective assessment of student learning should be grounded in clear objectives for the course; assessment can be a powerful learning tool that helps motivate students. A range of assessment options and examples is provided, including exams and quizzes, papers and reflections, peer feedback, discussion forums, and both in-person and asynchronous tools. The chapter also includes reflections on how to tailor assessment options to learning objectives, teaching resources, and class size. Authentic assessment and practical training needs of public health students are themes throughout.
