Abstract

Abstract Understanding how and when psychotherapy leads to meaningful change remains a fundamental challenge in mental health research and practice. While this question has endured for decades, recent advances in clinical science and technology have significantly expanded the ability to explore it with greater precision and depth. This chapter illustrates how a practice-oriented research approach has enabled an interdisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers to collaborate closely, leveraging innovations in clinical science and cutting-edge technology to uncover the dynamics that drive therapeutic change. The chapter opens with a personal prologue outlining the motivations behind establishing a research clinic rooted in a practice-oriented research approach. It then explores critical challenges in the conceptualization, treatment, and research of mental health. This is followed by a discussion of key theoretical shifts that have paved pathways for addressing these challenges, such as the transition from general treatment models to transtheoretical processes and the evolution from one-person to two-person psychology. The chapter further details how these theoretical innovations, combined with advancements in multimodal analysis and artificial intelligence (AI), have facilitated the study of intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics linked to improved therapeutic outcomes. Finally, the chapter concludes with reflections on the clinical and training implications of these findings, highlighting how they inform and enhance therapeutic practice.
