Abstract

Abstract In this chapter, the Jewish community in Hong Kong is presented in its history of almost two centuries and in its present-day diversity. The profile of the community is shaped equally by the few old Jewish families and the various expatriates, and by the long-standing institutions and their constantly varying shapers and beneficiaries. A special focus is given to the religious diversity within Judaism in Hong Kong, expressed in the existence of seven synagogues of five different kinds. Also considered is a special feature of the Hong Kong community: the invested assets of the founders from the nineteenth century, which have allowed the community to develop a plethora of services and to remain united, despite the differing backgrounds and views of newcomers. In addition, the Jewish community in Hong Kong is seen as a center by expatriates who live in more isolated places in Asia.
