Abstract

Abstract The concluding remarks of Part I consolidate the book’s conceptual foundation by articulating agape as the most encompassing form of love operative in healthcare and global health. Drawing together the analyses of merciful, compassionate, and beneficent love, this section defines agape as a universal yet deeply personal journey of attentive presence, shaped by prudence, practical reasoning, and the will. It clarifies how love matures through an internal process that integrates affectivity and deliberation, culminating in the reciprocal gift of self for the good of the Other—as Other. Rejecting both paternalism and passivity, the chapter emphasizes reasonable self-sacrifice, respect for agency, and shared responsibility. Through philosophical dialogue and artistic reflection, especially on Caravaggio’s Seven Works of Mercy, presence emerges as the moral measure of love. The section concludes by establishing agape as a directive for individual and institutional deliberation, preparing the normative turn of Part II.
