Abstract

Abstract This is the book for which my Catalogue of Polyphonic Songs, 1415–1480 (Oxford University Press, 1999) was originally designed as an appendix. The Catalogue listed the song repertory alphabetically by languages, giving for each work its form, sources, modern editions, and other relevant material. This book aims to provide a kind of map, a guide through the indiscriminate body of information in the Catalogue. While much has been written about the music, the two halves of the century have often been treated separately and the various language traditions have been viewed to some extent as isolated phenomena. Though there are good reasons for both, my main aim here has been to explore the benefits of seeing the whole repertory as a unit.
